A Computerised Proteomics System for Protein Pattern Analysis of Salmon (Salmo salar) Skin Mucus

Abstract for 5th International Workshop on Salmonid Smoltification that was held in Westport Co. Mayo, Ireland

This (click here pdf format) poster presents an outline of the development of the COPS, an integrated computerized diagnostic tool system that will make use of modern computing techniques and materials to aid in the analysis of protein profiles produced by SDS-PAGE gels. The COPS will be employed to provide meaningful biological information to determine the optimum time of transfer of Atlantic salmon smolts to the sea.

It is our belief that the investigation and application of the COPS will lead to a better understanding of some of the processes that the proteins in the salmonids undergo as they approach smoltification. It is expected that the success of the COPS will allow for a better and more accurate estimate of the optimum release time of Atlantic salmon smolts to the sea.

Final Year Project -
2001 BSc.Applied Sience Computer Science and Software Engineering

Sign Language Recognition using Neural Networks

As part of final year in college, we have to undertake a project that will contribute towards our qualification. The choice of the project matter is left up to the individual. The main criteria in choosing the project is that it should incorporates the software engineering and programming skills that have been learned over the duration of the course studies.

The project that I decided to undertake, was to try and develop a Sign Language Recognition System, based on an ordinary P.C. and a webcam.

The idea behind the project was to develop a system that would allow for a user to perform Sign Language in front of the webcam, and subsequently have the system recognise the signs that were being made.

In the end, a success rate of 100% was achieved using a simplified test base, and 68% using the A.S.L finger spelling alphabet.

I would like to continue working in this area, so if you know somebody who can help, please let me know at tricky@dna.ie Or if you have questions about the project, please do not hesitate to mail me.
